TWO MORE MAJOR PLEDGESRob Harrington
The SEC and Big Ten became enriched, as two member schools picked up big-time commitments during this signing week. Kentucky beat out Vanderbilt, Memphis and Florida for blue-chip combo forward Alex Poythress, a terrific athlete who can score at close-range, in transition or all the way to the three-point stripe. Poythress enjoys a national reputation but essentially boiled his recruitment down to more regional terms, with the Commodores at one time considered the leader ahead of Florida. But never count out John Calipari and the Wildcats, which now appear to be on their way to yet another top-five group. SPARTANS WIN FOR HARRISMichigan State prevailed over Indiana, Purdue and Kentucky for IN WG Gary Harris, one of the hottest recruits in the Upper Midwest. Harris, a skilled and explosive wing who had a big summer, is a legitimate McDonald’s All-American candidate. Getting Harris is huge for the Spartans, who are rebuilding somewhat and need wing firepower going forward. Harris has the solid frame to step right in as a freshman, too, and he should make an early impact. |
