Scholastic Play by Play:
Triangle Edition

February 4, 2011

Most of the season's major high school events have passed, with the bulk of the nation's best seniors not taking the court against each other until the postseason all-star games this spring.

But in addition to the numerous upcoming state high school playoff tournaments capturing the headlines, there's one final blast of Scholastic Play by Play events to close out the 2010-11 slate. In North Carolina, Duke and UNC will host several senior recruits on February 11 and 12.

In Cameron Indoor Stadium that Friday, Duke signees Quinn Cook and Marshall Plumlee will tangle in the opening game of the evening at 7:30 p.m. Though they won't match up directly, both play for strong teams (Oak Hill vs. Christ School, respectively) and loom as potential McDonald's All-Americans - a group that will be announced next week.

Oak Hill has another big-time senior - Ben McLemore - who is unsigned and perhaps the most hotly pursued prospect in the Class of 2011. The fact that he's a great leaper also excites crowds coast to coast as part of powerful Oak Hill's national schedule.

Oak Hill also has a fleet big man headed to Arizona next season: Sidiki Johnson.

In the nightcap, powerful Our Savior from New York will face another Duke signee, Michael Gbinije, of Richmond (VA) Benedictine at 9:00 p.m. Our Savior has its talented players as well, including St. John's-bound junior guard Jevon Thomas.

Moving to Chapel Hill on Saturday, Oak Hill first will battle Our Savior at 6:00 p.m. No doubt, Cook playing against Thomas will be a high-level competition of interest for all recruitniks. That's especially true for Red Storm fans, who will be watching eagerly to observe how their junior pledge fares against a Duke-bound prep All-American.

The featured attraction at the Smith Center will be Norfolk (VA) Christian versus Chatham (VA) Hargrave Military Academy. Played at 8:00 p.m, Tar Heel fans will be treated to a showdown between UNC top 25 signees James McAdoo and P.J. Hairston.

In addition to Hairston, Hargrave also features a star-studded complementary group that includes Dezmine Wells (Xavier), C.J. Barksdale (Virginia Tech), Marquis Rankin (Virginia Tech) and Robert Brown.

Between the two days, the games will feature an impressive total of 10 players ranked in PrepStars.com's national top 100!
