PLAY BY PLAY:
DUKE/UNC PERPETUATES

Duke’s ferocious second-half comeback enabled the Blue Devils to prevail over archrival North Carolina in Durham on Wednesday night, and this weekend the schools' current recruits will be on display on their future home courts. Over two nights, Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium and on Saturday at the Dean Smith Center, both schools’ signees will be in action.

The obvious angle for fans to consider — and certainly what we’ll be considering when watching over the next two days — is not only how good these recruits are but also how they may match up against each other down the line.

One point of comparison will be at the wing positions. Both Michael Gbinije and P.J. Hairston are natural wing forwards and will provide a point of comparison. Gbinije is a smooth and versatile jump shooter who will lead Richmond (Va.) Benedictine against Centereach (N.Y.) Our Savior on Friday night at 9:00, while Hairston — whose Hargrave Military Academy will face Norfolk Christian on Saturday at 8:00 in Chapel Hill — is more of a power wing who shoots well to beyond the three-point line.

Meanwhile, in the frontcourt, the big guys taking the floor over the two nights will be Duke’s Marshall Plumlee and UNC’s James McAdoo. Plumlee is a center and McAdoo is a big forward, but as evidenced at Duke Wednesday night, all the frontcourt players mix it up due to screens and when hitting the backboards, so there will be inevitable clashes between Plumlee and McAdoo in the future.

Plumlee isn’t as skilled or as touted as the other signees in the game, but he has excellent size and top-notch work ethic. McAdoo boasts tremendous lateral quickness and ranks among the nation’s best senior frontcourt prospects.

Of course, Duke has a signee who will play on both days: Quinn Cook. The big-scoring guard can explode for points thanks to his jump shot, yet he also is a capable distributor.

Says Prep Stars’ Brick Oettinger: “I think the main thing fans will see is that both programs continue to recruit top players. Some of the recruits are farther along than others, but there will be a high level of talent in town this weekend.”

Tickets can purchased on a walk-up basis at the respective venues. The doubleheader at Duke begins at 7:30 on Friday and at UNC, it tips off at 6:00 on Saturday.
