TWO MAJOR MOVES TO END WEEK

Rob Harrington

May 26, 2011

After quite a bit of indecision and conflicting reports, former Maryland commitment Justin Anderson switched his allegiance to Virginia. A top-35 national talent in the rising senior class, Anderson’s new commitment to UVa gives Tony Bennett’s Cavaliers a serious piece to build upon going forward.

Anderson is one of the most athletic players in the Class of 2012, boasting excellent strength, length and explosive leaping ability. He’s a particularly good defender, as evidenced by his stellar work last summer against elite guard Austin Rivers.

Maryland obviously is stung by his defection, but the Terps are making a hard push to establish the local relationships missing for so long within the program.

WILDCATS GET HARROW

In Lexington, N.C. State transfer guard Ryan Harrow has joined the Kentucky program. The former prep blue-chipper didn’t have a great year for the Wolfpack but is an excellent talent who is at his best as a creative scorer off the dribble, so from that respect he should fit in well at UK.

A Georgia native, Harrow also considered the Bulldogs in addition to interest from other high-major programs. He’ll sit out the 2011-12 season and be eligible thereafter as a sophomore.

BIG WEEKEND IN STORE

Memorial Day Weekend also is a huge one for the grassroots circuit, although the historical best non-Nike event, the Tournament of Champions in North Carolina, has been snipped due to the NCAA rule about having events on Division I college campuses. The TOC remains a credible event, but mostly its scope now appears to be regional.

Meanwhile, the Nike circuit’s third EYBL event will take place in the greater Los Angeles area. The usual strong array of teams will be on hand, and we’ll be there in addition to the TOC providing coverage.

The major newcomer to the field is the Best Buy event in Chicago, featuring a strong assortment of regional and national teams. We’ll definitely keep an eye on that one as well.
