COMMITMENT ROUNDUP

February 1, 2010

There were a handful of commitments to flow in during the weekend and early portion of this week, including some — though perhaps offered by generally lesser known players — given to high-major programs.

Stanford looked overseas to gain an unsigned center, 6-10 Serbia native Stefan Nastic, who is prepping at Ontario (CAN) Thornhill. Nastic played for the 18-under Serbian team last summer and actually is young for his class, so he may need a year or two of physical development before he’s ready to tackle Pac-10 competition.

EAGLES ADD SENIOR WING

Marquette looked to Philadelphia to get Devonte Newbill, a 6-3 WG at Philadelphia (PA) Strawberry Mansion. Newbill mostly had received high mid-major interest but has been a prolific scorer at Strawberry Mansion, and certainly there’s a place at any level for a scorer.

MINUTEMEN GO MINUTE FOR GUARD

UMass picked up a pledge from 5-8 PG Daryl Traynham, a well-traveled floor general who is finishing his prep career at Upper Marlboro (MD) Wise.

Traynham is a very quick, shifty guard who is a streaky shooter and playmaker who is best in an uptempo setting. Defensively, he possesses quick feet and is able to get under the dribble of many other guards. He’ll need to become a more controlled handler if he wants to excel for UMass, but right away he should bring the team energy and raw quickness.

SUN DEVILS, WILDCATS ADD TO BACKCOURT

Arizona State scored a commitment from Brandon Dunson, a 6-3 WG at Wabash (IL) JC. Dunston has averaged a relatively modest 12 points, four rebounds and four assists per game, but he plays for a very good team that is among the best junior college squads nationally.

He’ll have two years of eligibility at Arizona State.

At Arizona, the 'cats picked up 6-2 Los Angeles Westchester WG/PG Jordin Mayes.
