TAKING A LOOK AT THE NCAA RULE CHANGE

January 14, 2010

The NCAA this week announced a rule change that many considered a long time coming. Though the rule will not become effective until passed by the board of directors, associates of players no longer will be allowed to be hired by schools where those players go to college.

In practice, and in a growing trend, “handlers,” travel team coaches, family members and others recently have been landing college jobs — frequently in something of an administrative position, not necessarily as an assistant coach — immediately after a player signs with a specific school.

The new rule states that this practice will be outlawed, as “associates” (as defined by the NCAA) will not be eligible to take any position at the school where the player lands, either before or after the fact.
