ROUNDUP: COMMITMENTS
PICK UP PACE

Jim Dallke
June 24, 2009

It’s been a busy couple of days on the recruiting trail as six schools landed commitments since the beginning of the week. Earlier this week, California got a verbal commitment from 6-5 WG Alex Rossi, a sharpshooter from Winnetka (IL) New Trier. Rossi made his commitment just one day after the NBA Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville, Va.

At the camp he showed scouts his ability to knock down jumpers from all over the court, whether it be from outside or from 12-15 feet. Rossi doesn’t have a blazing first step but he is quick enough to finish around the basket and adequately defend opposing 2-guards. Rossi joins 6-6 WG Allen Crabbe as Cal’s early commits for the class of 2010.

Elsewhere, Texas improved its 2011 class by landing a commitment from 6-3 WG Julien Lewis. The La Marque (TX) High product is a great athlete who performs well on both ends of the court. He uses his length to get to the basket and demonstrates an ability to shoot from long range. Lewis is also a great on-the-ball defender and can guard anyone on the wing, whether it be a shooting guard or small forward. He joins 6-4 WG Sheldon McClellan and 6-0 PG Myck Kabongo as the Longhorn’s 2011 commits.

This week certainly hasn't been as successful for Southern California, as the Trojans found out 6-2 PG Gary Franklin decided to re-open his recruitment after the hire of Kevin O’Neill. Baylor, Washington, Oklahoma, Utah, California, and Connecticut are schools he is considering.

Both Xavier and Oklahoma also made news on the recruiting front. The Musketeers landed 5-10 junior PG Darwin Davis, a speedy guard from Bloomington (IN) South. Davis will bring good ball handling and blazing speed to Xavier coach Chris Mack. His three-point shot is still a work in progress and he will need to add muscle, but with his ability to run an offense and distribute in transition, Davis looks to make an immediate impact for the Musketeers.

Oklahoma nabbed 6-10 C Richard Peters from Weston (FL) Sagemont, the same high school as rising 2010 C Fab Melo. Peters, a 2011 commit, is a solid rebounding and shot blocking threat for the Sooners. His offensive game is a bit unpolished (he gets most his points off tip ins and drop off passes) but he is intimidating on the defensive front. If Peters can develop a stronger post game he will be a huge pickup for head coach Jeff Capel. Peters is the first commit for the Sooners in the class of 2011.

St. Joe’s added 6-3 WG/PG Langston Galloway from Baton Rouge (LA) Christian Life. Galloway’s strong family connections in Philadelphia led him to choose the Hawks over in-state schools LSU, Louisiana Tech and Tulane. Galloway gives St. Joe’s a very good athlete for the class of 2010 who can step back and hit a three, and use his length to get to the basket. He has impressed scouts with his hustle and his determination to never give up on a play. 6-8 BF C.J. Aiken and 6-6 WF/BF Daryus Quarles will join Galloway as the Hawk’s class of 2010.

Lastly, Oklahoma State landed 6-5 WF Brian Williams for the Class of 2010. Williams is an athletic small forward at Baton Rouge (LA) Glen Oaks who can hit the three with consistency and attack the rim with force. He uses his athleticism well in rebounding and should be a quality player for the Cowboys. Williams joins 6-4 WG Markel Brown as OK state’s class of 2010.
